SACRAMENTO BEE: Cal State students end hunger strike after 10 days

LOS ANGELES -- A student group says a dozen California State University students have ended their hunger strike to protest fee hikes and administrator raises after 10 days.  A spokesperson for Students for Quality Education says students who ended their fast were cheered by State Senator Ted Lieu's call for Chancellor Charles Reed's resignation.

In California now, efforts to ban a form of psychotherapy that claims it can make gay teens straight is now in the state's Senate. Supporters say the treatments don't work and can cause harm. Conservative religious groups say the ban interferes with parents' rights.

State Senator Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) wrote the bill and American Prospect's Gabriel Arana underwent this sort of therapy in 1998 in California. Arana says, it did not change his sexual orientation, and in fact he's now married to his same-sex partner.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- President Obama's remarks regarding his support of gay marriage come just one day after a first of its kind proposal. The California bill is aimed at banning gay therapy for teens, and it's now passed its final California Senate Committee.

Scotti Maldonado, 25, was just 15 when his youth pastor brought him to a therapist, hoping the visit would put a stop to his homosexual tendencies. "Making sure I understand what sexuality was and really making sure that I understood the way I felt about other men was wrong."

A new campus president at California State University can be paid 10 percent more than the outgoing president, but the raise has to come from non-public foundation funds, CSU trustees voted Wednesday.

The decision comes as six of the 23 campuses prepare to change hands, with two new presidents to be named Thursday at San Francisco State and Cal State San Bernardino.

The practice known as “conversion therapy” -- in which gay or bisexual people, usually teenagers, are “converted” to becoming heterosexual -- is that much closer to being banned for all minors in California thanks to a state lawmaker from Torrance.
