A California lawmaker is urging federal regulators to investigate a new tanning industry group he says is using “junk science” to mislead the public about the risks of sunbeds.

State Sen. Ted Lieu also charged that industry leaders formed the new group, the American Suntanning Association, to evade terms of a settlement with federal regulators who had charged another industry organization with making false claims.

TORRANCE DAILY BREEZE: Panel OKs Lieu bill on personal finance education

The state Senate's Education Committee on Wednesday approved a measure aimed at improving personal finance education in public junior and senior high schools across the state.

Senate Bill 1080, authored by state Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Redondo Beach, would authorize school districts to provide classes on personal finance topics, such as budgeting, savings, credit and identity theft.

The bill also would require the state Department of Education to include financial literacy in math and history books.

SACRAMENTO – After Sen. Ted W. Lieu cited how ‘illiteracy’ of basic financial topics has contributed to the economic malaise affecting California and the nation, the Senate Education Committee today approved his plan to improve personal finance instruction in public junior and senior high schools statewide.

TORRANCE DAILY BREEZE: Resolution would name PCH bridge for Jenny Oropeza

State Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, introduced a resolution today to name the Anaheim corridor bridge on Pacific Coast Highway after the late state Sen. Jenny Oropeza of Long Beach.

The bridge runs from Coil Street to the main entrance of the Tesoro refinery in Wilmington.

Lieu said in a statement that Oropeza, his predecessor, worked tirelessly for two years toward the completion of the $107 million project that added a third lane to hasten transportation of goods to and from the nation's busiest port complex.
