LOS ANGELES — A new bill announced March 21 would put in place new consumer protections against deceptive marketing in health care just as California prepares to implement the Affordable Care Act, which celebrates its two-year anniversary this week.

Speaking at a Los Angeles news conference with key community groups, California state Sen. Ted W. Lieu announced legislation to help consumers in California, a culturally diverse state, take full advantage of the new law and not be targets of fraudulent or deceptive marketing practices.

South Bay state Sen. Ted Lieu on Wednesday introduced a measure aimed at protecting consumers from deceptive marketing practices related to the health care industry.

The move comes as California prepares to implement the federal Affordable Care Act, which allows legal immigrants to apply for subsidies to purchase health insurance benefits.

Lieu's Senate Bill 1313 would prohibit health insurance companies from misrepresenting the requirements of ACA.

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A state lawmaker on Wednesday unveiled plans to help protect unwitting Californians with poor English skills from being taken advantage of when buying health insurance for the first time.

KNX 1070′s John Brooks reports 7 million Californians will soon have health insurance thanks to “ObamaCare” — unless the crooks get to them first.

The Affordable Care Act will make an estimated 32 percent of previously-ineligible Californians now eligible for insurance subsidies, many of whom speak English poorly or not at all.

Sen. Lieu introduces bill to protect consumers from wrongful medical billing

SACRAMENTO – In response to a radio investigation showing that medical patients are being wrongly billed without their consent, Sen. Ted W. Lieu of Torrance today announced legislation to require disclosure of treatment costs.

“Too often some of California’s patients find themselves facing incredible hardships because of unexpected – and extremely high – medical expenses in non-emergency settings,” Lieu said about the need for Senate Bill 1373. “There is need for a system where sticker shock at the bill doesn’t send the patient into cardiac arrest.”
