California Senate Bill 661 Becomes Law

September 17 , 2012 California Governor Jerry Brown has signed Senate Bill 661 into law, limiting protests at any funerals in California. The bill was introduced by Democratic Senator Ted Lieu of Torrance CA, himself an Air Force veteran. The bill was authored initially in response to the Westboro Baptist Church protesting funerals of America’s fallen war heroes.

California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed legislation Monday restricting protests at funerals, a year after vetoing a similar bill due to concerns over free speech.

The law is designed to target the Westboro Baptist Church, a group that has provoked national outrage by picketing soldiers' funerals with deeply offensive signs.

SACRAMENTO — Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation Monday to bar protests near funerals, prevent future accounting scandals and provide some legal amnesty to people seeking medical help for drug overdoses.

The measure protecting funerals says protesters on public property must be at least 300 feet from the burial site. Violators could be fined $1,000 or jailed for six months.

A bill by Democratic Senator Ted Lieu was approved by a legislative committee today (Tuesday).  It would make it illegal for anyone to protest a funeral unless they are 500 feet away:

LIEU: “There’s only one shot at a funeral for the grieving family and to have that sacred ceremony disrupted by funeral protestors is something that in a civilized society that we shouldn’t tolerate.
