IS WHAT WE EAT SAFE? (May 4, 2012) -- Sen. Ted W. Lieu, D-Torrance, has been quoted nationally in recent days for his efforts to improve food safety. First, his measure to require mandatory labeling of seafood served in restaurants and other outlets sailed through its first policy hearing April 25 after a comprehensive survey showed most seafood was mislabeled. Then, after alarming reports about an additive used by many food suppliers, Lieu called on the federal government to investigate the use of 'meat glue', or transglutaminase, to hold different types of meat together prior to consumption.
