Long Beach Press-Telegram: At the capital (Microchipping)
June 01, 2011
Pets would require microchips: A bill that requires dogs and cats taken from an animal shelter to be implanted with microchips for identity purposes has passed the state Senate.
The legislation by Democratic Sen. Ted Lieu of Torrance would require owners of an animal that is claimed or adopted from a shelter to implant a microchip. Lieu says it will improve the odds of reuniting lost pets with their owners.
His bill is supported by the Humane Society of the United States, but a coalition of pet owners says it is concerned the microchips can cause tumors and cancers in animals.
