Associated Press: Bill banning teens' use of tanning beds approved
California could become the first state to make it illegal for teenagers under age 18 to use tanning beds if Gov. Jerry Brown signs legislation sent to him by the state Senate.
Sen. Ted Lieu, the bill's author, says 30 other states have some restrictions but that California would be the first to set the higher age limit.
Texas bans use by teenagers under 16, while California already makes it illegal for those 14 and under. Californians age 15 to 17 can use tanning beds, but only with their parents' permission.
Lieu, a Democrat from Torrance, says Illinois, New York, Ohio and Rhode Island are considering bans similar to the one in SB746.
The Senate approved the bill Friday on a 24-12 vote when it agreed to Assembly amendments.
