TORRANCE DAILY BREEZE: Lieu bill would protect consumers from deceptive health care industry marketing
March 21, 2012
By Art Marroquin
South Bay state Sen. Ted Lieu on Wednesday introduced a measure aimed at protecting consumers from deceptive marketing practices related to the health care industry.
The move comes as California prepares to implement the federal Affordable Care Act, which allows legal immigrants to apply for subsidies to purchase health insurance benefits.
Lieu's Senate Bill 1313 would prohibit health insurance companies from misrepresenting the requirements of ACA.
The proposed measure also prohibits insurers from selling certain types of products, such as cancer-only insurance, to those who do not have health care coverage meeting basic requirements.
SB 1313 will be reviewed April 18 by the state Senate Health Committee.
"Millions of Californians will soon have access to affordable health care coverage, many for the first time in their lives," Lieu said. "We know from past experiences, however, that dishonest people take advantage of the consumers' lack of knowledge about new opportunities or enrollment criteria."
