GUEST PRESS RELEASE: Energy Security Coordinating Act of 2012 Approved
May 30, 2012
FROM THE OFFICE OF SEN. FRAN PAVLEY
Sacramento – The Energy Security Coordination Act of 2012, Senate Bill 1409, was approved by the State Senate today on a unanimous, bi-partisan vote. SB 1409 is authored by State Senator Fran Pavley (D-Agoura Hills), co-authored by Senator Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana) and Senator Ted W. Lieu (D- Torrance).
The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) declared climate change and oil dependence as strategic national security threats and U.S. oil dependence as creating significant risks to our men and women in uniform. This bill directs the Governor’s Director of Planning and Research to take the lead in coordinating energy policies with the DOD and helps resolve any conflicts that may arise in the military’s research, development or deployment of clean energy in California.
Senator Pavley said, “Every day, the United States sends about $1 billion overseas for oil. Middle class families are being disproportionately impacted by the cost of those foreign subsidies while men and women serving in our armed forces put their lives at-risk every day protecting our national security. By coordinating clean energy research and development, California takes an active role as a strategic ally with the DOD to advance and achieve our nation’s energy security.”
SB 1409 will encourage the Governor to better coordinate implementation of policies that advance energy security with the Department of Defense. It will ensure that California is doing all it can to support our Armed Forces’ energy security mission at home and abroad.
“California can be a strategic ally to the DOD in advancing our nation’s energy-security objectives,” Sen. Ted W. Lieu, a US Air Force veteran, said in support of SB 1409. “Putting into place more efficient energy policies will help create demand for increased investment in cleaner, alternative energy. This bill a win-win for California residents.”
SB 1409 co-author Senator Lou Correa, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran said, “The DOD has declared climate change and oil dependence as strategic threats to our national security and provides operational risks to the men and women serving our country. California has an obligation to help the military mitigate these threats”
Senate Bill 1409 is sponsored by the Truman National Security Project. Thousands of veterans across the country have joined forces under the Truman project to execute Operation Free, a national campaign to break our dependence on oil through clean energy. The bill now goes to the State Assembly for consideration.
