June 19, 2012 – A bill passed by the California Legislature last year that allows the City of Long Beach to recoup expenses for providing emergency medical transport to Medi-Cal patients, could help reduce the proposed $4.8 million in cuts to the Long Beach Fire Department in fiscal year 2013.

Former Democratic state Sen. Jenny Oropeza would be honored posthumously with a Los Angeles County highway overcrossing named after her under a proposal zipping through the Legislature.  Senate Concurrent Resolution 79 awaits final action in the Assembly after being approved by the Senate without a dissenting vote, 33-0. The Assembly Transportation Committee will consider the measure today.

GOADING one animal to kill another is a serious crime — as in cockfighting or dogfighting. But turning loose a group of animals to chase down prey and kill it or send it up a tree where it can be shot, is still regarded in some strange quarters as a "sport."

Well, it's not sport. And we need to do away with it in California.

State Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, awarded the owners of Tony P’s Dockside Grill in Marina del Rey with a business of the year award.

Restaurant owners Tony Palermo and Dan Ringwood met in in Detroit in 1975 when they were both cooks. They also worked together at Teasers in Santa Monica in the early 1980’s, and opened Tony P’s in 1996.

They say it's only PETA-loving liberals who loathe hunting with hounds. But a 2011 poll found that 83 percent of Californians oppose the cruel practice -- including more than 75 percent of Republicans.
