I'm submitting this letter on behalf of Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States.

Californians have twice made clear their opposition - in two statewide ballot measures (Prop 117 and Prop 197) - to allowing hunters to chase down mountain lions with packs of dogs so they can be shot at pointblank range for trophies.

Applying that same reasoning, it's equally wrong to deploy dogs against bears or bobcats.

The California state Senate has passed a bill that supporters say could be the first in the nation to ban a form of psychotherapy aimed at making gay people straight.

"The entire medical community is opposed to these phony therapies," California state Sen. Ted W. Lieu said after his groundbreaking bill on "sexual-orientation change efforts" passed May 30 by a 23-13 vote.

"Everyone agrees that this quackery needs to stop," he said.

TORRANCE DAILY BREEZE: Lieu bill regulating 'buy here, pay here' car loans passes state Senate

The state Senate voted 23-12 on Thursday to approve a South Bay lawmaker's bill aimed at regulating car dealers who offer "buy here, pay here" installment loans.

Senate Bill 956, introduced by state Sen. Ted Lieu , D-Redondo Beach, would require dealers to obtain a state lender's license so consumers are better protected when purchasing vehicles.

The bill now goes to the Assembly for consideration.

The bills win floor votes in the Legislature. They would require Buy Here Pay Here dealers to cap interest rates, provide limited warranties and disclose more about vehicle values, among other things.

Three bills that aim to reform and regulate Buy Here Pay Here used-car dealers moved forward this week in the California Legislature, winning floor votes that clear a significant hurdle to final passage.

The California Senate passed Wednesday a bill that would regulate therapies that purport to be able to change a child's sexual orientation -- from gay to straight.

"The entire medical community is opposed to these phony therapies," Sen. Ted W. Lieu, D-Torrance, said after passage of Senate Bill 1172, which he introduced.

SB 1172 would prohibit children younger than 18 from undergoing sexual orientation change efforts.
