Santa Monican Julie Weiss, who recently achieved her goal of competing in 52 marathons in 52 weeks to raise awareness about pancreatic cancer, has been named Woman of the Year for the 28th Senate District.

State Sen. Ted Lieu (D-Santa Monica) made the announcement in celebration of National Women’s History Month.

 State Senator Ted W. Lieu, who represents Santa Monica and the South Bay, announced today victims of crime who want to attend court proceedings involving their alleged perpetrator would have greater protections from fear and discrimination under his measure approved today by the Senate.

The number of warrants for paroled sex offenders who are removing their ankle trackers has nearly doubled since California reduced penalties to aid in alleviating prison crowding, officials said this week.

The state’s policy change, which sent parolees to county jail instead of state prison for low-level crimes, means offenders only spend a few days in local lockup; if the facility is overcrowded, it could mean no jail time at all.

Legislation that aims to end surprise hefty bills for using credit or debit cards at pay phones appears to be on course to reach Gov. Jerry Brown's desk.

The measure — growing in part out of litigation involving a San Diego-area company and military troops using pay phones at an airport in Germany — unanimously passed the state Senate last week.

TORRANCE DAILY BREEZE: State Senate OKs Ted Lieu ’s ‘swatting’ bill

A South Bay lawmaker’s bill to increase penalties for false 9-1-1 calls designed to prompt a huge police response to the homes of celebrities — a practice known as “swatting” — passed the state Senate on a unanimous vote Thursday.

Under the bill by Sen. Ted Lieu , D-Redondo Beach, anyone convicted of making a false report would be forced to pay for the costs of the episode. Lieu said the restitution could be as much as $10,000. The legislation now moves to the Assembly.
