A bill that would add heavy regulations on self-checkout stations in large grocery and drug stores, received both support and opposition in the past week.

Senate Bill 1446, authored by Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas (D-Los Angeles), would specifically prohibit grocery and drug stores from providing a self-service checkout option for customers unless specified conditions are satisfied.




A California bill would change how stores regulate self-checkout lanes, which could result in some stores abandoning the service altogether.

The bill, officially known as SB 1446, would prohibit grocery or retail drug stores from offering self-checkout options unless all the following conditions are met:




California grocery and drug stores would be prohibited from operating self-service checkout stations without adequate staffing, under a proposed law being considered in Sacramento. The bill is being championed by organized labor and opposed by business groups.




Advocates had a virtual news conference promoting a new bill that would regulate self-checkouts Monday morning.

Supporters say it'd cut down on thefts in California stores and boost employment.




Self-checkout lanes are increasingly utilized, lessening the need for more costly employee-staffed checkout stands.

However, California Sen. Lola Smallwood-Cuevas said self-checkout lines are a freeway to theft.
