When backdrop rental company J.C. Backings moved out of their long time tenancy at the Scenic Arts Building at Sony Pictures Entertainment, it was the end of an era. Films that use CGI don’t need painted backdrops, however gorgeous. But a new era is about to launch, as Sony has unveiled the renovated Scenic Arts building as a new event space, that can be rented out for parties, as well as office and production space for films.

The California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC) was established in 1967 when African American members of the California Legislature, under the leadership of former State Sen. Mervyn Dymally, came together to address issues faced by Black Californians.




First-termers made the state Legislature the most diverse ever and racked up some policy wins for their constituents. But they also ran into a bill and budget process that wasn’t always transparent.

On October 8, 2023, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Senate Bill No. 497, the “Equal Pay and Anti-Retaliation Protection Act.” The new law amends California Labor Code sections 98.6, 1102.5, and 1197.5 to create a “rebuttable presumption of retaliation” if an employee experiences an adverse employment action within 90 days of engaging in any protected activity covered by the specified sections. This new law, which will become effective on January 1, 2024, also entitles a prevailing plaintiff civil penalties for each violation.




The Honorable Diane Edith Watson, Ph.D., celebrated her 90th birthday on November 12, and all throughout the week, Los Angeles honored her illustrious career of public service.
