Senator Smallwood-Cuevas Celebrates Mother’s Day with CalWORKs Students
Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas (D-Los Angeles) hosted a Mother’s Day Tea & Paint event today for CalWORKs student mothers attending West Los Angeles College. The special brunch and painting session was held to enable the CalWORKs students to celebrate Mother's Day with one another while meeting Senator Smallwood-Cuevas, whose district territory includes the college campus.
During the event, the students gathered inside of the campus library’s banquet room, where they were greeted by Senator Smallwood-Cuevas and her district staff. The Senator spoke to the students about her own upbringing, being raised by a teenage mother who sought to better support her child by putting herself through nursing school as a single parent. She also shared about her new bill SB 521 that provides campus protections for pregnant and parenting CalWORKs students.
Many of the students brought along their children, who were able to join their mothers on the library’s scenic terrace to participate in the fun painting lesson.
Senator Lola Smallwood Cuevas represents the 28th Senate District, which includes the communities of South Los Angeles, Culver City, West Los Angeles, Century City and Downtown Los Angeles.
